Press play

For some reason I had the notion to dip into the site again. And was completely shocked to realise it's been almost exactly one year since I posted. Good grief. What on earth happened there? Apparently I had the wit to write a blog post to indicate things were not skipping along in creativity land - how very thoughtful of me. Don't even remember doing it, but reading it, it sounds pretty much on the nose.

So, what's been going on? There has actually been art done. Not a lot, but it has been done. I spent a few months doing some non bps style pieces. Jackie, the gallery owner who's sold a few of dancers, thought my style would work well with people doing things. I came up with the chill out range - people reading, fishing, flying kites and so on. A bit quirky. Some of them sold which was nice. But, they don't stir me creatively.

There's nothing wrong with making art that's more mainstream if it sells. The point is to sell it (for most people). But in the end, I came back to this - dance etc. is what I like to do. They don't do well in the local gallery since they're a specialist area and the right eyes don't get on them enough, but I don't care. I like what I like and I'm going do what engages me and work out the best way to get them in front of interested people. Of course, if I don't do that I end up with boxes of them taking up space in my rented room. And space is precious. There may be something coming up that helps in the eyeballs thing but that's for later...

Besides not sculpting, I've been not painting either. Okay, not strictly true. There's been some tinkering with paper based mixed media work on these new mixed media canvases - they have a hard back to them so they're great for layering or pasting on heavier whatever you want to use. This has been good for someone who sucks at design and structure, since it offers lots of ways to work out a piece, to paint or paper over what doesn't work and use up all the textured papers accumulated over the years. There's too much art stuff in my home space so yeah, using it seems like a good idea.

Three small pieces were done and taken to the gallery for what I knew would be a straight opinion. Turned out to be a good opinion and they went up on the walls, get plenty of interest and one has sold (the gecko below). Woohoo. I did not expect that. So there'll be a few more of those to do and see where it goes.

Meantime, I'm critter sitting in Scotland and doing a lot of writing. I should be doing the other writing now but here I am instead just going with the flow. But now it's time to see if the tortoise is awake (awake or asleep isn't much different to be honest) and feed her (hand feed in fact 🙄) then fuss the gorgeous floofy kitty. If it's not raining, a walk down to the village is in order. So far the sun is shining but I spy dark rain clouds looming in the west. I may get wet. Meh, who cares? It's wonderfully, blissfully peaceful here. What more do I need?
